US House forces digital TV shift

The US House of Representatives, in a setback to new President Barack Obama, on Wednesday rejected his call to delay next month's nationwide shift to digital television.

The Senate unanimously agreed on Monday to delay the switch from an analog to a digital signal, which had been scheduled for February 17, until June 12 but the House rejected the move in a 258 to 168 vote on Wednesday.

The vote fell short of the two-thirds majority needed for passage of the bill without amendments.

Members of the Democratic-controlled House are expected to bring it back to the floor again to try to secure passage with a simple majority.

Before he took office, Mr Obama's transition team had called for a switch to digital to be delayed, arguing that many people were not yet ready for the end of analog broadcasting by the major US television networks.

The government has been providing Americans who rely on over-the-air signals with a $40 coupon to defray the cost of buying a digital converter box.

But the coupon programme has run out of funds and, according to research firm Nielsen Co., more than 6.5 million American households are not prepared for the move.

Many of the unprepared are low-income households, minorities, seniors or disabled, according to Nielsen.

The switch to digital television will free up wireless airwaves for public safety agencies and other advanced mobile services.

Satyam CEO identified?

The government has said candidates for positions of the CEO and the CFO in the crisis- ridden Satyam have been zeroed in and legalities are being worked out to provide legal immunity to them so that they are not held responsible for the liabilities of the IT major.

"We have zeroed in on two persons of eminence to be appointed as the CEO and the CFO... but they want certain sort of protection so that in case of some liabilities they are not held responsible. So that process is going on, we are working on that," the corporate affairs minister, Mr Prem Chand Gupta, said in an interview to private television channel.

He said nobody would like to join a company in controversy and, therefore, the modalities of providing legal immunities are being worked out and the appointment of the CEO and the CFO would soon be done.

He said the person, who will not be called a CEO because of involvement of certain legal implications, is from outside the company. He added that the person to be appointed as CEO has worked in an Indian multinational company earlier.

As regard better compliance by corporates, he said, "We need better enforcement, better compliance, and better mindset...so that the government is not forced into bringing additional laws and create unnecessary problems."

Hayden bids adieu to game

One of Australia’s greatest opening batsmen Matthew Hayden called stumps on Tuesday on one of international cricket’s most imposing careers. The 37-year-old batsman did not go out of the game the way he would have wanted — having to call a press conference to announce his retirement, widely anticipated after his struggling form in Australia’s recent series losses. But the powerfully-built Hayden will be remembered as one of the modern-day cricketing titans, amassing 8,625 runs in 103 Tests at an impressive average of 50.74.

His departure further strips the transitional Australian cricket team of another big-name star, following the retirements of celebrated teammates, Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Justin Langer and Adam Gilchrist in the last two years. Only skipper Ricky Ponting remains of the players who twice (from 1999-2001 and 2006-2008) won a record 16 Tests in succession.

“Today I am announcing my retirement from representative cricket effective immediately,” Hayden told the press conference at his home Gabba ground.
“This is a decision that I have not taken lightly and I am here after much thought, consideration and discussion with my family and close friends.
“It is ultimately my decision and I know that now is the time to move on to the next stage of my life and career.”

Hayden’s decision comes against the backdrop of meagre returns in Australia’s back-to-back series losses to India and South Africa. Since returning from an Achilles injury suffered during last year’s Indian Twenty20 Premier League, Hayden scored 383 runs at 23.93 in his last nine Tests, less than half of his career Test average. Hayden had been desperately trying to cling onto his spot for a final Ashes series in England in mid-year before retiring from the game.

But the signs were there that he had lost the support of selectors, who left him out of the Twenty20 and one-day teams in the wake of the Test series loss to South Africa. Yet Hayden leaves cricket with 30 Test centuries, which ranks him sixth all-time behind Indian Sachin Tendulkar’s 41. Hayden’s 380 scored against Zimbabwe in Perth in October 2003 stands second only to West Indian Brian Lara’s world record 400 not out as the highest individual innings in Test cricket. He formed with Justin Langer one of Australia’s more durable opening partnerships in Test cricket.

Will A.R.Rahman win Oscar?

Music composer A.R. Rahman on Monday became the first Indian to win a Golden Globe award and is already looking forward to bagging an Oscar for his soundtrack for British filmmaker Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Milloinaire.

Excerpts from an interview:
Q. I don’t think any Indian musician has won the Golden Globe award?
A. I see it as an honour for India, not just for me. More to come, hopefully.

Q. Golden Globe is seen as a precursor to the Oscars.
A. Let’s hope so. I’ve my fingers crossed. When a film and my music get acceptance, it’s the equivalent of an Oscar for me. For the people of India to get an Oscar is a big thing. So for their sake more than mine I hope my song Jai ho and my music score in Slumdog Millionaire win the Oscar.

Q. Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto says of the four Golden Globe nominations for the movies, yours makes her the proudest.
A. That is really sweet of her. I was in Los Angeles to have lunch with all the panel members of the Oscars as well as to do press meets and promotion for Slumdog Millionaire. Some critics in the US say it’s one of the best films they’ve ever seen. It’s not just about my music. It’s the way Danny has put together the film. The throbbing pulse of Mumbai has been superbly captured in the film. Slumdog Millionaire is about suffering, hope and redemption. If my music has made an impact in  the West, it is because it has been projected so effectively. Though some of the songs like Jai ho, O saya and Ringa ringa are in Hindi, the Americans love them.

Q. Were you in the US to lobby for an Oscar?
A. It’s not about lobbying, but about letting the jury members get to know you and decide if the person behind the creation is worth putting a vote for. As an artiste, I need to be recognised on a human level.

So I needed to go to Hollywood with my song. I met top Hollywood music composers like Hans Zimmer, Howard Shore and Danny Elfman.

Q. And what did they have to say about your music?
A. They made genuinely warm comments about my music. I think they love the Mumbai that they have seen in the film.

Obama bailout faulted

President-elect Ba-rack Obama’s economic recovery plan ran into crossfire from his own party in Congress on Thursday, suggesting that quick passage of spending programmes and tax cuts could require more time and negotiation than Democrats once hoped.

Senate Democrats complained that major components of his plan were not bold enough and urged more focus on creating jobs and rebuilding the nation’s energy infrastructure rather than cutting taxes. Just hours earlier, Mr Obama called for speedy passage of the stimulus measure, warning that the recession "could linger for years" if Congress did not pass his plan within weeks. For his recovery plan, Mr Obama has been assembling a package worth $775 billion over two years to revive the sagging economy.

US gives free hand to Israel over Gaza

US President George W. Bush, in remarks to be broadcast on Saturday, urged all able parties to press the Hamas to stop firing rockets at Israel and secure a lasting ceasefire, after a week of heavy Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip.

His administration, meanwhile, gave Israel free rein over whether to send ground troops into Gaza, despite growing criticism over its handling of a conflict that has killed at least 436 Palestinians and left 2,290 others wounded. “The United States is leading diplomatic efforts to achieve a meaningful ceasefire,” says the text of Mr Bush’s address, released by the White House in advance. He said, “I urge all parties to pressure Hamas to turn away from terror, and to support legitimate Palestinian leaders working for peace,” including Mahmud Abbas, President of the US-backed Palestinian Authority.

Vacation over, Obama readies for inauguration

US President-elect Barack Obama returned with his family to his hometown Chicago early on Friday after a 12-day Hawaii vacation and prepared to travel on to Washington this weekend ahead of his inauguration.

Mr Obama’s chartered jet touched down at 12:33 am after an eight-hour flight from the Pacific island state and nearly an hour later the family arrived at their Hyde Park home. The President-elect, wife Michelle and daughters Sasha and Malia stepped off the plane clad in winter jackets to face temperatures just below freezing, a harsh change from the balmy weather they enjoyed on holiday.

The Obama family will bid farewell to Chicago on Sunday, moving to the US capital 16 days before he is sworn in as the 44th US President. They will be housed at the luxury Hay-Adams Hotel, a stone’s throw from the White House.

Mr Obama had requested to stay at Blair House, the government’s official guest residence just across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House, but the Bush administration said it was booked solid through January 15. The Obama daughters are to start school in Washington on Monday. The new Congress, stacked with a greater Democratic majority, will be sworn in Tuesday. President George W. Bush has invited Mr Obama to a White House lunch on Wednesday, along with former Presidents Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter.
