US giving Pakistan $100m N-safety aid

The US is providing technical support at an estimated cost of $100 million to Pakistan in order to keep that country’s nuclear arsenal out of the extremists’ reach and prevent accidents. Andrew Cockburn, a renowned author who has written several books on security issues, says that the official aim of US technical support, at an estimated cost of $100 million a year, is to prevent accidents and to ensure that they are out of the extremists’ reach.

But in pursuit of this objective, “it is inevitable that the US is not only rendering the warheads more operationally reliable, we are also transferring the technology required to design more sophisticated warheads without having to test them,” the report adds. The author quotes a former national security official as saying that if the US is involved, “we can make sure they don’t start testing, or start a war.”

This system known as “stockpile stewardship” was conceived after the US forswore live testing in 1993. It allows scientists to “test” weapons through computer simulations.
This vastly expensive programme not only ensures the weapons’ reliability but also the viability of new and improved designs.

The report says that in 2008, the Pakistan military approached Bruce Blair, president of a Washington-based World Security Institute, seeking advice on means to render their weapons more secure. “Their aim was clearly to render their nuclear force mature and operational,” the Dawn quoted Mr Bruce Blair, as saying.

Mystery behind Michael Jackson death

Michael Jackson, defined in equal parts as the world’s greatest entertainer and perhaps its most enigmatic figure, was about to attempt one of the greatest comebacks of all time. Then his life was cut shockingly — and so far, mysteriously — short.

The 50-year-old musical superstar died Thursday, just as he was preparing for what would be a series of 50 concerts starting July 13 at London’s famed 02 arena. Jackson had been spending hours and hours toiling with a team of dancers for a performance he and his fans hoped would restore his tarnished legacy to its proper place in pop.

An autopsy was planned for Friday, though results were not likely to be final until toxicology tests could be completed, a process that could take several days and sometimes weeks. However, if a cause can be determined by the autopsy, they will announce the results, said Los Angeles County Coroner Investigator Jerry McKibben.

However, Police investigating Michael Jackson's death looked into his medical treatment Friday, seeking to interview one of the pop king's doctors and seizing a car that they said may contain drugs or other evidence.

As medical examiners began an autopsy for Jackson, police towed a BMW from rented home "because it may contain medications or other evidence that may assist the coroner in determining the cause of death," police spokeswoman Karen Rayner said.

Two dead in Washington rush-hour metro crash

Two subway trains slammed into each other on Monday killing two people as one train crashed onto the top of the other at the start of
Washington's busy evening rush hour, officials said.

Television images showed at least two carriages of one train had been mounted onto the top of the other one, partially crushing at least one carriage below, as reports said there were also massive injuries.

"We have two confirmed fatalities," communications official Carlotta Tyler said, adding that "there have been some serious injuries."

The collision occurred at 5:00 pm (2100 GMT) near the Fort Totten Metro station close to the District of Colombia's borderline with the state of Maryland.

"A six-car Red Line train... was involved in a collision with another train at 5:00 pm (2100 GMT) today," the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA) said in a statement.

Emergency workers were seen battling to lever up the raised carriages to get to the one below where commuters were believed to be trapped inside.

Dozens of passengers, safely evacuated from the train, were standing by the train tracks close to the collision site.

Washington Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department spokesman Alan Etter told a local ABC television news station the incident was "developing into a mass casualty event."

Trains were being turned back at Brookland, Takoma, Rhode Island Avenue and Silver Spring stations "due to a train experiencing mechanical difficulties outside of Fort Totten station," WMATA said, adding shuttle bus service had been requested.

The last major crash in the United States was in September, when 25 people were killed when the conductor of a train in Los Angeles was sending text messages on his mobile phone during working hours when he was driving a commuter train.

The deadly collision on Friday in Chatsworth, north of Los Angeles, also injured 134 people and was the worst train accident in the United States in some 15 years.

Corruption in Pak up by 400%

Corruption in Pakistan has surged up by 400 percent in the last three years, says a survey report.
The National Corruption Perception Survey 2009 (NCPS 2009) indicates that the overall corruption in 2002 was Rs 45 billion and has increased to Rs 195 billion in 2009. The police and power departments maintained their ranking as the top two most corrupt sectors.

The survey model prepared by TI in 2002 was used, and 24 page questionnaire was repeated to carry out surveys from 5,200 respondents from all the four provinces. The physical survey commenced in February 2009 and completed in April 2009. The NCP survey 2009 results confirm that Pakistan has Laws, but not the Rule of Law.

Major findings of Pakistan NCPS 2009 are:
* Police, Power, Health and Land are the most corrupt departments respectively, and Judiciary, Customs & Taxation have improved their rankings since 2006.

* In response to the query on comparing civilian and military government, respondents said civilian government was more corrupt.

* The Present District Government System has been rated as more corrupt by 66.48 percent respondents, than the previous District Government System.

* Majority (60 per cent) of respondents feel that government/armed forces should not be involved in commercial activities.

Ganguly scalps yet another coach

Sourav Ganguly claimed yet another coach, with the Kolkata Knight Riders dumping their controversial Australian coach John Buchanan.

KKR top brass refused to confirm the development but sources claimed that the Shah Rukh Khan-owned side informed the coach that his services were not needed. Buchanan had one more year of his three-year term to go. Coincidentally, Buchanan is the third coach who has lost his job after falling foul of Ganguly. While Dada got along just fine with John Wright, the New Zealander quit the post after just one term. He wrote in his autobiography later that he had a tiff with Dada.

Greg Chappell, the abrasive Aussie who dethroned Ganguly, lost his job in controversial circumstances. Buchanan had proposed a four-captain theory and gradually eased Dada out as the captain of KKR for the IPL second edition. Sources said Buchanan’s replacement could be from among Dave Whatmore, Steve Waugh and Lalchand Rajput.

Asked about the development, the KKR chief executive officer, Mr Joy Bhattacharya, said, “At the moment, I cannot confirm the development.” Actor Shah Rukh Khan’s media manager declined to comment, saying, “We don’t have any such reports. Both Shah Rukh Khan and (co-owner) Jay Mehta are out of station, so it’s difficult to comment now.”

The Buchanan chapter was closed soon after he landed a role with the English and Wales Cricket Board. “He (Buchanan) is joining the Englishmen for their Ashes preparation on June 28, which could develop into a full-time post,” the insider said. “Buchanan was never in Shah Rukh’s good books, especially after the team's disastrous show in South Africa, the sources said.

A woman who was lucky enough to beat death last week is not lucky enough to beat death again.

An Italian woman who arrived late at the airport for the fatal Air France flight 447 has died in a car accident, according to ANSA news agency.

Johanna Ganthaler, a pensioner from the Bolzano-Bozen Province (South Tyrol, Italy) and her husband, Kirk, were on vacation in Brazil and missed flight 447 after arriving at the airport late. They were able to board a later flight and avoided being victims of the horrible crash.

The couple rented a car in Munich, Germany and decided to drive home to Italy. On their way home, while driving through Kufstein, Austria, their car ended up in the opposite lane and they had a head on collision with a truck.

The woman died at the hospital that she was taken to. Her husband is still in critical condition.
